On this page you can download a Japanese illustration which dates from the 18th century.

In the old book where we have found it, it is stated below the illustration that it shows the celebrated actor Tomedjuro Nakamura in the role of Kaishi. The illustration was drawn by the famous ukiyo-e artist Torii Kiyonobu in 1750. Torii Kiyonobu was a famous ukiyo-e painter and one of the founders of the Torii painting school. Ukiyo-e is a genre of woodblock prints and paintings that was popular in Japan between the 17th and 19th centuries. The most common motifs in ukiyo-e paintings are sumo wrestlers, beautiful women, historical events, kabuki actors, landscapes, flora and fauna...

In order to paint this ukiyo-e illustration accordingly, you can search on the Internet for the original to help you in doing so. Except for the way we have painted it, the Illustration also differs from the original by the fact that we have traced a slightly modified image from the book and not the original Japanese illustration.
