Picture frames are made mostly of wood and consist of four side pieces (frame members or frame pieces), end-joined to form a substantially rectangular, open-centered structure. The decorative function of the frame is achieved through various cross-sections (profiles). A frame member that has a decorative cross-section is called a molding (moulding).
